The Patients Manager is a helpful utility for making alterations in bulk to patient records, specifically;
Ensuring that all patient's names are formatted with the same case structure (e.g. all UPPERCASE).
Where
possible, ensuring that the patient's sex at birth matches their
title (e.g. Mr = Male). Upon creating a new patient record the
patient's sex at birth is entered automatically, based on the
patient's title. But this is not compulsory information, and it
may be that you have a number of patient records (perhaps after
merging a secondary database from another surgery) that don't
have a gender recorded against them. Note also that this works
only for patients with a recorded sex at birth of 'Male' or 'Female',
and will not work for genders of 'Intersex/Other'.
Whilst it is not compulsory to record a gender it is important
to know that if you do not, you will not have access to some functionality
for that patient, such as the Obstetric tab and the Cervical Cytology
Request window. Furthermore, some patient prompts will not appear
(cervical cancer vaccinations, for example), drug interaction
checking for pregnant patients will not be active and conducting
searches for patients where the criteria includes gender will
not return the patients in question.
